Tent city has been the home to many of Sacramento's homeless for years. Located off the Sacramento River near the 12th St. entrance to downtown, Tent city began becoming more populated in early 2009 when city officials began cracking down on people living on the streets downtown.

As the area began becoming more populous, it began drawing more attention and became a bigger liability to the city because it had no running water, plumbing, safe access to electricity, garbage disposal bins, or restrooms and was also techincally private property.

The old Tent City was the beloved home to many but was surely not suitable for living. It provided the people there with the autonomy and independence everyone wants, but not with the necessities everyone needs. The plea here is not for a handout; just safe ground where basic needs can be met.
